At home at Fitzgerald Spartan Stadium Wednesday evening, the Boys Varsity soccer team opened the MHSAA Soccer Playoffs with a 2 – 1 win, beating the Phoenix of Detroit Renaissance. Keeping the Phoenix offense under control & frustrated for the first half was the outstanding team defense of Mohammed Kibria, Marwan Enan, Stephen May and Abdou Sall and the stellar goal keeping of Rahib Chowdhury. Renaissance scored a late 1st half goal, to pull even with the Spartans at halftime 1 – 1. The Spartans scored a first-half goal by Sophomore, Marven Kola. In the second half, the Spartans worked to hold back the offensive challenges of the Phoenix. The Varsity boys kept the pressure on through-out the second-half. Marven Kola was fouled in the box, which resulted in a penalty-kick. Mohammed Kadir stepped to the penalty line and buried the shot into the back of the net for a 2 – 1 lead.
Spartan Player of the Match – Marven Kola scoring his fourth goal of the year.
The Spartan Varsity team is on the road next Monday, October 17th, for an MHSAA District semi-final game, against the Norseman of Grosse Pointe, kick-off for this match-up will be 7:00 pm.
